Simplified English
Internet Radio
Radio helped me learn French
Radio was a big help when I learned French.
I listened to France Info while driving to work. I chose it because the speakers spoke clearly, without slang, and used natural French.
I wasn’t studying French. I was just listening.
This is one of the best things about radio for learning languages.
Why pronunciation matters
Pronunciation is very important.
When you meet someone, you form a first impression quickly. Their voice is as important as their looks.
Speech tells you a lot: not just words and grammar, but confidence, education, where they are from, their background, emotions, and attitude.
You don’t need to sound perfect. But clear pronunciation makes talking easier and changes how people see you.
That’s why listening should start when you begin learning a language.
Why radio works well
Radio has a special advantage: you don’t have to focus on it.
You can leave it playing while:
- cooking
- driving
- working
- exercising
- walking
- doing chores
It doesn’t demand your full attention. You can listen when something interests you, and let it fade into the background when you’re focused on something else.
Radio is the music of language
There’s another benefit that’s easy to overlook.
The more you hear a language, the more familiar its sounds, rhythm, and intonation become. You absorb the music of the language.
You start to notice:
- how sentences rise and fall
- where speakers put emphasis
- how words blend together
- the natural speed of conversation
- common expressions
- what different accents sound like
Much of this happens without thinking about it.
You are training your ear.
Choose your radio carefully
This is important.
Not all radio is good for language learning.
I chose France Info because the French was clear and easy to follow. If you want to improve English, don’t pick the fastest, slangiest station.
Look for stations where:
- speakers speak clearly
- pronunciation is standard
- speech is a big part of the show
- vocabulary is varied
- there isn’t too much music
- you enjoy the presenters
Once you get better at listening, try different accents and more casual speech. But at first, clarity is key.
Internet radio makes this easier
You don’t need to live in France, Britain, Australia, or the US to listen to their radio.
Thousands of stations are online, and your smartphone can be a language-learning tool.
I use this app:
Internet Radio
Click “Download APK” and give permission. Google might have changed this by now.
Internet Radio is great because it lets you treat radio as always available.
Some Google Play options
There are also good internet-radio apps on Google Play:
- TuneIn Radio — lots of live stations from around the world, plus news, sports, music, and podcasts. TuneIn Radio on Google Play
- Radio Garden — fun way to explore radio by location. Spin the globe, pick a city, and listen to local stations. It has thousands of stations and lets you play in the background. Radio Garden on Google Play
- myTuner Radio — access to over 50,000 stations from more than 200 countries, searchable by country, city, or genre. myTuner Radio on Google Play
Don’t worry too much about finding the perfect app. Just find good stations in your target language and listen regularly.
Try this
Pick one or two stations in your target language.
Play them while doing other things.
Don’t try to understand every word.
Don’t stop to translate every sentence.
Don’t make it homework.
Just listen.
After a few weeks, you might notice that speech which sounded like noise now separates into words and phrases.
That’s progress.
Radio isn’t a substitute for speaking practice. But it’s one of the easiest ways to get lots of language exposure.
And like music, the more you hear it, the more familiar it becomes.
APPENDIX — F-Droid and Android security
F-Droid is an alternative Android app store that focuses on free and open-source software. Its security model is different from Google Play: F-Droid publishes source code and build information, and its infrastructure supports building apps from source and verifying reproducible builds.
This does not mean F-Droid is “malware-free”, nor that Google Play is unsafe. Google Play has a huge security system, including Google Play Protect, which checks apps for harmful behavior and can warn about, disable or remove harmful apps.
There is, however, an important difference in incentives and architecture:
- Google Play: huge user base means a successful malicious app could reach many victims.
- F-Droid: smaller user base makes it a less attractive target for mass-market malware campaigns.
- F-Droid’s build and source-transparency model provides additional verification: for supported apps, F-Droid can build the app from source and compare it with the developer’s release.
F-Droid has a strong structural advantage.
There is also a big change coming to Android. Google’s developer-verification system starts applying in Indonesia and several other countries from 30 September 2026 on participating app stores and certified Android devices. Google says this makes Android safer and harder for bad actors to distribute harmful apps. Google also provides a verification path for developers who distribute apps exclusively outside Google Play, so this shouldn’t be described simply as “Google killing F-Droid.” The practical question is therefore not whether one ecosystem is absolutely safe. It is which security model and distribution system you are comfortable trusting.>

Internet Radio
Radio is how I learned French
Radio played a surprisingly important part in my French.
When I was commuting to work by car, I listened to France Info. I chose it deliberately: the presenters spoke clearly, there was no slang, and the language was intelligent and natural.
I was not sitting down to study French. I was simply listening.
And that is one of the great advantages of radio for language learning.
Why pronunciation matters
Pronunciation matters enormously.
When we meet someone, we form impressions very quickly. Appearance is one part of that first impression; the way someone speaks is another.
Speech conveys a tremendous amount of information: not just vocabulary and grammar, but confidence, education, region, social background, emotion and attitude.
You don’t need to sound like a native speaker. But clear, natural pronunciation makes communication easier and can change the way your speech is perceived.
This is why listening should be part of learning a language from the very beginning.
Why radio works so well
Radio has a particular advantage over many other forms of language practice: you don’t have to concentrate on it.
You can leave it playing while you are:
- cooking
- driving
- working
- exercising
- walking
- doing things around the house
It doesn’t demand your full attention. You can listen properly when something interests you, and let it fade into the background when you are concentrating on something else.
Radio is the music of language
There is another benefit that is easy to underestimate.
The more you hear a language, the more familiar its sounds, rhythm and intonation become. You gradually absorb the music of the language.
You begin to recognise:
- how sentences rise and fall
- where speakers put emphasis
- how words run together
- the natural speed of conversation
- common expressions and patterns
- what different accents sound like
Much of this happens without conscious study.
You are training your ear.
But choose your radio carefully
This is important.
Not all radio is equally useful for language learning.
I deliberately chose France Info because the French was clear and relatively easy to follow. If your objective is to improve your English, don’t automatically choose the fastest, most slang-heavy station you can find.
Look for stations where:
- presenters speak clearly
- pronunciation is reasonably standard
- speech is a substantial part of the programme
- the vocabulary is varied
- there is not too much background music
- the presenters are people you enjoy listening to
Once your listening ability improves, deliberately introduce different accents and more informal speech. But in the beginning, clarity is your friend.
Internet radio makes this much easier
You no longer need to live in France, Britain, Australia or the United States to listen to their radio.
Thousands of stations are available through the internet, and a smartphone can become a small language-learning machine.
I use this F-Droid application:
Internet Radio
Click on “Download APK” and give install permission. By the time you read this, Google may have turned off this option for “security”. Read about that below.
Internet Radio is particularly useful because it lets you treat radio as something that is simply there whenever you want it.
Some Google Play alternatives
There are also several established internet-radio applications on Google Play:
- TuneIn Radio — a very large catalogue of live AM/FM and internet stations from around the world, together with news, sports, music and podcasts. TuneIn Radio on Google Play
- Radio Garden — an enjoyable way to explore radio geographically. Spin the globe, select a city and listen to stations broadcasting from there. It currently lists thousands of stations and supports background playback. Radio Garden on Google Play
- myTuner Radio — provides access to more than 50,000 live stations from more than 200 countries and territories, with searching by country, city and genre. myTuner Radio on Google Play
Don’t worry too much about finding the perfect application. The important thing is to find several good stations in the language you are learning and make listening part of your ordinary day.
Try this
Choose one or two stations in your target language.
Put them on when you are doing something else.
Don’t try to understand every word.
Don’t stop to translate every sentence.
Don’t turn it into homework.
Just listen.
After a few weeks, you may notice that speech which initially sounded like an uninterrupted stream of noise has started to separate itself into words and phrases.
That is progress.
Radio is not a substitute for speaking practice. But it is one of the easiest ways to give your brain a huge amount of exposure to a language.
And, like music, the more you hear it, the more familiar it becomes.

Radio Internet
Mengapa radio sangat efektif
Radio memiliki keuntungan khusus dibandingkan banyak bentuk latihan bahasa lainnya: Anda tidak perlu fokus padanya.
Anda bisa membiarkannya bermain saat:
- memasak
- mengemudi
- bekerja
- berolahraga
- berjalan
Anda mulai mengenali:
- bagaimana kalimat naik dan turun
- di mana pembicara menekankan kata
- bagaimana kata-kata bergabung
- kecepatan alami percakapan
- ungkapan umum dan pola
- bagaimana berbagai aksen terdengar
Banyak dari ini terjadi tanpa studi sadar.
Anda sedang melatih telinga Anda.
Beberapa alternatif Google Play
Jangan khawatir terlalu banyak menemukan aplikasi sempurna.
Jangan coba memahami setiap kata.
Jangan berhenti untuk menerjemahkan setiap kalimat.
Jangan ubahnya menjadi tugas rumah.
Hanya dengarkan.
Radio bukan pengganti latihan berbicara.
