Subtitles: The Dutch

The Dutch are great at English because they watch English shows with Dutch subtitles from a young age.

When to Use Indonesian Subtitles

  • Beginners (A1–A2): YES (Advisable)

  • Why: Helps if your English words and listening skills are weak.

  • What it does: Shows English sounds and words with familiar Indonesian words.

  • Intermediate & Advanced (B1–C2): NO (Bad)

  • Why: Your eyes focus on reading Indonesian instead of listening to English.

  • What to do instead: Use English audio with English subtitles. This helps you learn English words and how to say them.

  1. Phase 1 (Building Context): Watch with English audio and Indonesian subtitles if you are new to a topic or have a hard accent.
  2. Phase 2 (Active Learning): Switch to English audio with English subtitles. If you don’t understand a word, pause and look it up.
  3. Phase 3 (Fluency & Ear Training): Watch English shows without subtitles to practice listening.

Alternative: Dual / Bilingual Subtitles

Use browser extensions like Language Reactor on YouTube or Netflix to see both English and Indonesian subtitles at once. This lets you read English while checking Indonesian when you need help.

Example: Language Reactor

Language Reactor helps you watch shows in your target language with another language’s subtitles.
